This winter is shaping up to be busier than I ever thought possible, as I have recently become the Chair of the Abstract Artists Group of New England (“AAGNE”), which is a Featured Interest Group of Newburyport Art. AAGNE is twenty-four years old and comprises approximately seventy abstract artists. I have a lot of history to learn, and I am surrounded by kind and generous artists who are offering their support, insights and experience as I take on this new challenge. Given my new role I’ve decided to enter fewer shows for the next several months, so that I also have enough time to paint. My painting technique is evolving, and I have started throwing paint onto the undercoat of my large canvases before proceeding with my customary layers of heavy body paint. I do this with bottles of fluid paint and a flick of my wrist. It’s a lot of fun but fairly messy. The streaks of thrown paint are thick and show through the layers of paint above, providing even more texture and visual interest. The photos don’t do these paintings justice. They really need to be seen in person. I will be the Featured Artist at the Coffee Factory, 56 State Street in Newburyport, from January 28 - February 28. The Coffee Factory has a gorgeous thirty-one foot brick wall where I will be hanging some of my largest paintings that measure 48” x 36” and 36” x 36”, along with smaller paintings. The opening reception is on Saturday, February 1st from 6:00 - 7:30, and I hope you will all stop by for some refreshments, camaraderie and art. One of my large paintings, Just a Hunk of Burnin’ Love, will be in Rocky Neck Now - the Rocky Neck Art Colony’s Annual Members Show, from February 21st - April 6th. The Rocky Neck Art Colony is over 150 years old, with many famous artists in its storied history. Learn more about it here: www.rockyneckartcolony.org.
